Local Gems: Hop City

For a very long time I wasn’t a big fan of beer. This was 99% because 99% of the beers I had had were of the ‘very cheap watered down nasty trash beer that every college party has’ variety. Luckily, Hop City exists, and now I can find out all of the different brands of beers, lagers, pilsners, and ciders I love. I visited the Birmingham location, which is right outside downtown Birmingham, and about 10 minutes away from the airport.

Hop City has 2 locations: one in Atlanta, and one in Birmingham. They’ve been open since 2009, and sell all types of beer and wine. They’re open 10-9 Monday through Wednesday, 10-10 Thursday through Saturday and are closed on Sundays.

With more than 30 different beers on tap, you can sit down and enjoy sample sizes or half pints of any of the beers – with friendly staff to help you decide what you want. It’s a bit daunting at first, but the more you chat with the staff the better they can help you find the perfect beer for you. The samples of the draft beers are crazy cheap and there’s always something special on tap for a dollar or 2 more.

One of the best ways to get your money’s worth at Hop City is to get a Growler: a reusable 32 or 64 oz glass jar of your favorite beer. Fill it up with your favorite beer on tap, take it home, drink it, and when you bring it back, they wash it out, label and reseal your beer for you. Pretty phenomenal.

While they do carry staples like Sam Adams and the like, they carry a lot of locally brewed beers and what’s on draft changes with the seasons (more reason for multiple trips). But fear not: if your favorite beer isn’t on tap anymore, they most likely still sell it in 6 packs in the store.

To know what they’ve got on tap, you can check out their twitter, or their website.
