A Playlist for Spring

I don’t know if this happens to anybody else, but sometimes I’ll hear a song and categorize it as belonging to one of the four seasons. There’s no real criteria for this, it’s just an intuitive thing. Summer gets a lot of Jimmy Buffett, autumn gets a lot of folk rock, and spring, as you’re about to discover, gets a lot of crooners. I thought I’d share some of my “spring songs” with the Nerdship before the weather gets hot and humid and awful and the moment has passed.

1. “Beyond the Sea” – Kevin Spacey

This might actually be my favorite song of all time. (Apparently it’s Katie Couric’s favorite song too.) As much as I appreciate Bobby Darin, Kevin Spacey’s rendition is the one I like best. This song makes me think of a guy standing on a pier looking out over the ocean on the first nice-weather day of the year.

2. “Good Day” – Luce

This song describes the kind of perfect day that can only happen in the spring. The weather is either too hot or too cold the rest of the time.

3. “Peaceful Easy Feeling” – The Eagles

I don’t really have an explanation for this one. It just kind of evokes a nice April afternoon for me.

4. “Rain” – The Beatles

You know what they say about April showers….

5. “Fly Me to the Moon” – Frank Sinatra

More crooning! Frank wants to know what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars. That’s a romantic sentiment, but it’s probably not that great in either location.

6. “Pleasant Valley Sunday” – The Monkees

This song has a touch of social commentary in it, but aside from that it puts me in mind of idyllic suburbia when the shrubs have just begun to flower.

7. “Build Me Up Buttercup” – The Foundations

This one is a lot like “Peaceful Easy Feeling.” It just has the right vibe.

8. “Everybody’s Spring” – Seth MacFarlane

Even more crooning, and it’s literally about spring!

9. “Rock and Roll” – Eric Hutchinson

I had no idea going into this how spring-like the music video would be for this song. Those people sitting out in their bathing suits do indicate “summer” more than spring, but I’m going to assume they are the kind of people who are so excited about the weather warming up that they’ll try to tan when it’s 55 degrees out.

10. “Mellow Yellow” – Donovan

Spring really is the most mellow of all the seasons, isn’t it?
