Oh golly gee, Nerdship, we’ve arrived at our second (of six) comic-inspired cocktails for our dastardly pair up with Pop Cultured Podcast. Exciting, isn’t it? If you check out our inaugural Comically Cocktailed inspired beverage post yesterday you would already know that this is going to be an everyday thing this week. If you missed that post – go read it quick! Back? Excellent!
So, as I was saying we have now arrived at cocktail number two and this one is inspired by none other than the goodie-two-shoes man himself, Superman. Like Batman, Supes has had several different incarnations along with varying temperaments and costume stylings. The one that generally comes to mind for me is the stereotypical-good-ole-boy Clark Kent, Smallville’s number one son. He’s kind, always willing to assist the elderly with their groceries or street crossings, and is almost too innocent to a fault. In the early comics Superman was very rough and aggressive against baddies and ruckus makers but in the last few decades (in both comics and movie screens) he’s become a little softer with his human side. Sure he’ll still bring righteous justice to those in need and he will probably use his x-ray vision to cause a little mischief when Lois isn’t looking (because you can’t tell me that he’s NEVER done that before… right….) He is as wholesome and American as cherry pie, at least that’s the vibe I tend to get from reading and watching Superman-things. [DISCLAIMER: Superman is probably one of my least-liked major super heroes… and my knowledge on all things Clark Kent may be a bit limited but we’re making a drink here not writing a biography. Forgive me, Nerdship, since I may be completely wrong and Supes might not be a goodie-goodie, but instead be a stupid d***bag… cough cough…. Golden Age Superman].
Let’s make a Superman-inspired cocktail that’s just as sweet, wholesome, and whollop-giving like the beloved last son of Krypton. And we’re going to make it taste (very delicately) like cherry pie!
I guess what I like about this cocktail the most is the gradient effect that this beverage develops. It goes from blue to a deep red down at the bottom of the glass (Thank you Grenadine!). Like most of our other alcoholic-inspired cocktails (or just cocktails in general), this one is a slow sipping drink, not a guzzle-down-as-fast-as-you-can-because-Bobby-has-the-webcam-out-again-and-we’re-tryin-to-get-more-hits-on-YouTube beverage. If you’re feeling thirsty, you also have the option of cutting this drink with some Sprite if you so choose. Please be aware of you alcoholic tolerances and don’t go being a hero if you’ve had 2-3 of these.
As American as Cherry Pie
1oz Iced Cake Vodka
.5 oz Whipped Cream Vodka
1oz Kraken Black Spiced Rum
.5oz Blue Curacao
3 drops -Blue Food Coloring (optional, but encouraged.)
.5oz Cherry Brandy
4oz Sprite to cut the booze (optional)
Grab either a pint glass (if cutting it with sprite) or a rocks glass and put some ice in it.
Then grab your cocktail shaker, fill it partially with ice then add in: cake vodka, whipped cream vodka, krakken, curacao and blue food coloring (if using it). Shake it like a screaming baby that won’t calm down (seriously kidding about this analogy, child abuse is a serious thing and Superman will come bust up anyone who does that to a kid). Strain into your glass.
Grab the shaker again and add in your grenadine and cherry brandy. Shake and strain into the same glass as the blue liquor mixture. The brandy/grenadine mixture will sink to the bottom and look really cool.
If you’re cutting it with Sprite add it to your glass now. Make sure you have a straw or something that you can stir this with since the grenadine is a rather dense liquid and likes to sink to the bottom and stay there.
As always – please drink responsibly. If you do consume several of these, please resist the urge to dawn a red towel cape and wear your underwear on the outside of your pants. Oh and please don’t go jumping off any high buildings… you really can’t fly.
If you make this drink, please let us know what you think of it. We love hearing from you guys so don’t be shy. Feel free to leave us a comment below or on our Facebook page … or if you’re feeling really snazzy tweet us!

Oh and be sure to check in with Pop Cultured this week as they’ll be shouting out some questions on their Facebook and Twitter pages. We’re actually going to be hosting them at Nerds and Nomsense NQ this coming Sunday (baring any world apocalypse-causing-event) for their special 10th Episode Podcast-taping-thingy. We’ll be cooking up some nerdtastic party foods and I’ll be sure to share those recipes with you this coming week as well! So… that’s exciting. Wish us luck!
