Kate’s Top 9 Firefly Quotes

Firefly-Quotes_featured

I could go on and on and on about how great a series Firefly is, and could go even … on-er about how great the language of the show is. It was difficult for me to narrow down my favorite quotes from the season, so I made it a bit easier for myself and decided to do one quote per character. Which was still very difficult to do. But I persevered, and I think that makes me a big damn hero. Of blogging.

Mal

Mal

Mal: The next time you decide to stab me in the back, have the guts to do it to my face.

Why I Picked It:

At first glance it’s kind of silly, stab me in the back to my face? But, as often as he comes off as silly, I think it says a lot about the man Malcolm Reynolds is. He puts up this brutish front, but really loyalty and crew mean a lot to him. He will not abide any double dealing back stabbiness.

zoe

Zoe

Zoe: Sir? I think you have a problem with your brain being missing.

Why I Picked It:

If there’s one thing Joss Whedon does well (and he does many many things well) it’s writing badass ladies. Zoe is one of my favorite fictional characters in the whole verse and not a whole lot can change that. Zoe does not simper, she does not falter. She speaks her mind when her captain is being an idiot and is proud to be a BAMF.

wash

Wash

Wash: The legs! Oh yeah, definitely have to say it was her legs. You can put that down. Her legs, and right where her legs… meet her back. Tha— actually, that whole area. That, and… and above it. Have you seen what she wears? Forget about it. Have you ever been with a warrior woman?

Why I Picked It:

I love how much Zoe and Wash love each other. And, if I could, I would put the whole interrogation scene in for the quote for this episode. It’s kinda long, though, so I won’t. I picked it because everyone this is so in character and it’s the first time you see Wash without the crew on the show and that is important.

Jayne

Jayne

Jayne: Six men came to kill me one time. And the best of ’em carried this. It’s a Callahan full-bore auto-lock. Customized trigger, double cartridge thorough gauge. It is my very favorite gun. [holds the gun out to Mal]

Mal: You offering me a trade?

Why I Picked It:

Mostly just because “it is my very favorite gun” is a thing I say all the time, but replacing gun with whatever I’m holding. I love so much of Jayne’s dialogue that it was hard to pick, but I decided to go with what is, to me, one of the funniest lines in the series.

kaylee

Kaylee

Kaylee: [staring at a bowl of strawberries] Is that him?

Mal: That’s the buffet table.

Kaylee: Well, how can we be sure, unless we question it?

Mal: Fine. Don’t make yourself sick.

Why I Picked It:

Mal and Kaylee’s relationship gives me the warm fuzzies. It’s easy to forget how young Kaylee is, and her love, to distraction, of strawberries and pink frilly dresses really drives that home. She might be a prodigy mechanic, but she’s still a girl. And she’s awesome.

Simon

Simon

River: You gave up everything you had to find me. You found me broken. It’s hard for you. You gave up everything you had.

Simon: Mei-mei, everything I have is right here.

Why I Picked It:

Simon and River are in trouble and Simon is still all about River and trying as hard as he can to keep her close and to keep her safe. He feels responsible for everything that’s happened to her, and has given up everything he had to atone – but would never blame River for living on the run. And, just, UGH. I love how much everyone on this show loves each other, ok?

River

River

River: She understands. She doesn’t comprehend.

Why I Picked It:

Objects In Space is my favorite episode of any television show ever. I love that the entire episode is so in River’s head and you finally get to see the chaos that is her mind. I love her interactions with Jubal and organizing the crew – because they’ve taken her as a child when, really, she sees more than any of them and can’t begin to process it.

Inara

Inara

Inara: What did I say to you about barging into my shuttle?

Mal: That it was manly and impulsive?

Inara: Yes, precisely. Only the exact phrase I used was, “Don’t.”

Why I Picked It:

I love Inara’s relationship with the crew and I love that she takes no sh*t from anyone, especially Mal. She’s clever, well-spoken, and sexy and not even a little ashamed of it. In the second episode she is being clear that she will be listened to.

Book

Book

Book: It’s not about making sense. It’s about believing in something, and letting that belief be real enough to change your life. It’s about faith. You don’t fix faith, River. It fixes you.

Why I Picked It:

I think Book is far under-appreciated, and that the few times he talks about Belief, it isn’t in a God sense. Faith is what keeps Serenity together. Faith in the ship, faith in each other. They come from all different walks of life, but their faith in Serenity is what keeps them together and what keeps them going.
