SDCC 2014 | Day 2 Recap

day2ComicConRecap_NerdsAndNomsense_Featured

Happy weekend, Nerdship! Let’s cut the fat and get straight into the goodness that was announced, previewed, and revealed yesterday for San Diego’s Comic Con International 2014. Oh, and let’s not forget about David’s favorite cosplays for the day – some of which were pretty epic!

The Goodies:

Game of Thrones Season 5: The New Characters.

Fans filed into the gigantic Hall H for the Game of Thrones panel yesterday and found themselves in a world of giddy, GoT joy when a slew of new cast members were revealed. The lovely people at HBO even made my job easier and created a video introducing the new actors to play these roles. All I can say is bring it on Season 5, bring it on.

If you haven’t read the novels yet…. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? The new additions in Season 5 will be exciting, especially with the introduction of the Sand Snakes.
And there was a blooper reel for season 4 which is full of laughs and an epic dance scene at the end. You’re welcome, Nerdship!

Sam Raimi and his plans for an Evil Dead TELEVISION SERIES + film adaptation of The Last of Us.

Evil Dead: There aren’t a lot of details surrounding the developement of the new TV series since Raimi is remaining quite tight-lipped about the whole thing. We can tell you that cult-film icon, Bruce Campbell, and Raimi’s brother, Ivan, are going to be key members in the development of the show. Hopefully this means that this new series is going to continue down the same storyline – or at the very least, continue the series’ original continuity. But we could be completely wrong about it… so I guess you’ll just have to wait and see. There isn’t a set date for the series to appear on TV, but it is already in early development.

The Last of Us: Again, this is only in the early developmental stages but Sam Raimi and Neil Druckmann (who is one of the game’s original directors) announced that Sony is going to try to condence the 15 hour game into a feature-length film… and guess who they want to play the game’s lead character: Maisie Williams AKA Arya Stark from Game of Thrones. Which is an excellent match if you ask me, the only hitch is that this film is a year or three from the ‘filming stage’ and it’s possible that when the filming time comes Williams may not be interested / too busy / not the right fit anymore. Who knows…

Our beloved Firefly… into a game?

Yes, you aren’t reading that wrong- FIREFLY VIDEO GAME! For years fans have pleaded Joss Wheddon to continue on with the awesomeness that is Firefly, but due to scheduling conflicts and other directing gigs (like the Avengers…) it looked like that wasn’t going to happen. However, in a little panel today, fans found out that there’s going to be a game… cue Firefly Online (or FFO for short). There’s been a few Firefly games in the past that were hinted but they either flopped, lost funding, etc… You may be asking yourself if this too might flop but let me tell you something: THE ORIGINAL CAST IS GOING TO REUNITE AND PROVIDE VOICES FOR THE GAME!

The game is currently in development but by the looks of the trailer, it will be a browncoat’s wet dream. (I mean, am I right or am I right?)

The game is developed by Sparkplug, in conjunction with Quantum Mechanix and FOX. It will continue with the same stories as the original series, too! Due to the overwhelming excitement over the new game, fans rushed to the developer’s website and crashed it.

D.C. : Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and The Justice League

Alright, so today is the big D.C. panel in Hall H where everything is going to be announced including more info on the Batman V. Superman movie that is scheduled to come out in May 2016.  We already know that the movie is going to include not only the Bat and Supes, but Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) will also be in the film. In a smaller panel today it was revealed that there is going to be a Justice League film in the works. DC and Warner Bros. hopes that all will proceed smoothly and that they can release the JL film back to back from the Batman v. Superman film.

The studio is looking at Chris Terrio to continue working with and writing for them since his recent draft on the Bats vs. Supes movie… hoping that it’s going to set things up for the JL sequel.
We will have more DC announcements tomorrow following today’s big panel. Stay tuned.

Walking Dead, Season 5:

  • Let’s face it Season 4’s finale was one heck of a cliffhanger. Season 5, which is slated to air in the beginning of October looks to be one heck of a duzy.
  • Expect to see more changes / variations from the graphic novel, and don’t freak out about them. And keep your eyes peeled for lots of new characters.
  • Everyone is hinting around the residents of Terminus being cannibals, but it hasn’t been completely confirmed.
  • And, as shown in the trailer, we’ll finally get to find out where Beth ran off was abducted to.
  • I’m deeming season 5 “The Quest to Washington.”

2 more Avengers: Age of Ultron posters were released…

Star Wars… another animated adventure:

  • Disney has used Comic Con, yet again, to generate buzz about their latest Star Wars “for kids” animated series, Star Wars Rebels.
  • I don’t really know how I feel about this since I didn’t care for the other animated series in the Star Wars universe. ( I mean seriously, what they did to Yoda just creeps me out.) I’ll leave it to you to decide.
  • All bets are on Disney unveiling the new Star Wars film next year.

Marvel’s Agent Carter

Agent-Carter-ABC-TV-Series-LogoGUYS! I’m stoked about it. Agent Carter is a bhadhass… (it’s a word, just go with it.)

In a nutshell: It’s going to be set in the 1940s, following Captain America’s disappearance, and is set to star original actress, Hayley Atwell. What’s going to be different about this series is that it’s not going to have just one director. Marvel and ABC are hopefully going to showcase various Marvel film/television directors during this series. My hope is that they can keep the style somewhat continuous. Whedon is rumored to possibly direct a few episodes as well as the Russo brothers and Joe Johnston. Johnston was the director for the Rocketeer, so that already lends credibility to his knowledge of the times/era.
The series will air hopefully around January of 2015.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1:

For the last month or so we’ve been teased with little videos from Panam’s President Snow. Today, Lionsgate and the Hunger Games panel released the first actual trailer of the third installment of the series. Side note: if you’re at SDCC you should go check out the Hunger Games Experience at the Hard Rock Hotel’s Lounge 207.
Unfortunately, it’s not available to the non-Comic Con-going public yet but it is sure to release soon, and as soon as it does we will share it with you. I can tell you that the majority of the teaser trailer deals with Coin and Plutarch while they discuss what to do with Katniss and her situation. It runs about a minute long and you’ll even get to catch a glimpse of Natalie Dormer as Cressida.

‘The Flash’ Pilot

  • Airs October 2014 on the CW and will coincide with DC’s current tv gem, Arrow.
  • Having actually watched the pilot for DC’s newest comic-turned-television series, I can say that it’s alright. I won’t spoil anything for you, Nerdship. Diehard fans will probably either love it to pieces or hate it. DC’s Geoff Johns claims that The Flash “would be the most faithful DC adaptation yet.” We’ll see if this holds to be true or not.
  • The casting of Barry Allen seems to be a wise choice with Grant Gustin, even though lots of Flash fans didn’t approve of the casting decision at first. His origin story stays pretty much the same as it does in the comics, so that’s nice. If it’s one thing I hate is when people mess with origin stories…. but that’s just me.
  • Remember the 90s TV version of the Flash played by John Wesley Shipp? Well guess who plays Allen’s father, and the two actors have pretty good chemistry together.
  • The pilot’s villain/bad guy is a bit ‘meh’ but I’ll leave it up to you for the final judgement.
