The Companion Cocktail

It probably comes as no surprise that I am a HUGE Firefly fan, Nerdship. I use “shiny” in everyday conversation as well as a few choice Mandarin phrases when I get flustered. Wash is my co-pilot and Mal is my science fiction man-crush of all time. So with today being the Dark Horse Comic’s release of the first comic AFTER Serenity. I decided it was a good day to celebrate. How, you ask? Well, with this delicious cocktail inspired by the beautiful Inara Serra.

[Sorry for the smudgy looking closeup of the glass… I wasn’t thinking and dried it with a cheap paper towel and it left little bits… and I was too lazy to go in on Photoshop and clean them up.]

Unlike our Shindig Punch, which is inspired by the adorable Kaylee, this luscious libation is a bit exotic with a touch of Asian flair. It looks frilly, but I think every Browncoat in the ‘Verse should try it at least twice.

A few months ago when we did our Firefly Week, I really wanted to make some more Firefly-inspired cocktails but alas, my bartending juices weren’t flowing at the time so I only came up with one. That’s okay though, cause it’s not set in stone that I can only come up with nerdy-inspired cocktails during certain weeks. In fact, last week I sent out a ping to most of our social medias asking you guys (our beloved Nerdship) to challenge us by sending us the name of your favorite Fandom or character to which we/I would then make an inspired cocktail. If you missed it, don’t worry. I am still accepting drink-challenges for the foreseeable future so if you have one in mind, shoot it to me in the comments below or on the various social medias.

A bit on this cocktail:

We were browsing around Williams-Sonoma a few weeks ago to spend a gift certificate that we received for Christmas and I came across some delicious Hibiscus syrup which was on sale – so we bought it. Apparently WS is no longer selling said syrup so we’re linking a comparable brand. You can use this stuff in teas, savory dishes, and cocktails. I’m sure you’ll see the syrup making it into a few more of our drinks and recipes in the coming months because is so dang tasty! If you want to be even fancier with this cocktail you can purchase the actual hibiscus flowers in syrup and then spoon one into each drink.

The Firefly ‘Verse is a mash-up of many cultures, but one of the most prominent is  that of Chinese/Japanese elements, so I wanted to add that same flair into the drink. Cue the peach sparkling sake! I didn’t know that sparkling sake even existed until I was browsing the liquor store last week. As someone who doesn’t really drink sake, except on special occasions, I was happily surprised and thought that it would be a swell addition to our Companion cocktail.

You may be saying to yourself, HOLY OATIE-BAR, BATMAN THAT’S A LOT OF INGREDIENTS!? You’re probably right, but I’m always trying different combinations for drinks and sometimes you need to have 5 different liquors and 3 different syrups/juices to make something amazing.

Directions:

  1. Grab a large shaker and fill it half way up with ice.
  2. Roll the blood orange around on the table before you squeeze the ever-loving juice out of it into the shaker. It’s perfectly fine if some of the pulp comes with it. I find that the drink looks prettier that way, like little gems.
  3. Go ahead and pour in all of your liquors, syrup, and pineapple juice.
  4. Shake it like Serenity when she’s lost her Primary Buffer Panel – about a minute or so. It will be foamy from the sake, that’s what we’re going for.
  5. Pour into your respective glasses and enjoy. If you have those little paper umbrellas, go ahead and garnish with them.
  6. Enjoy this tonight while reading the latest in the Firefly Saga.

And as always, please drink responsibly. Don’t make us send the Alliance after you!

OMG new Firefly adventures!

Cover Artist: Dan Dos Santos

Here’s the teaser:

Malcolm Reynolds’s crew shook the ‘verse to its core when they laid bare the crimes against humanity undertaken by their sinister government—the Alliance. Always outlaws, Mal, a very pregnant Zoe, new pilot River Tam, and the other surviving crew members are in greater danger than ever. Meanwhile, everyone is asking the same question . . .Where’s Serenity?

You can purchase the physical copy and digital copy straight from Dark Horse Comics. Both are about 4 dollars.

Personally, just from reading the teaser I was hooked… so I bought the digital copy and will definitely get the hard copy later. I know what I’ll be doing this evening!!! I am really glad that they are continuing the saga from where they left off with Serenity, I can’t wait to see where they take it from here.

What about you? Are you as happy about this as I am? What are some comics that you enjoy? Don’t be a stranger and tell us in the comments below.
