Shindig Punch | Lovely Little Libation

ˈSHinˌdig/ | noun | informal

noun: shindig; plural noun: shindigs

  1. a large, lively party, esp. one celebrating something.

For starters, who doesn’t like a good ole’ fashioned shindig. At one point in your life or another, EVERYONE will attend one of these. Some are very lush and some are more quaint. Where am I going with this? Well our plucky heroes happen to find themselves at one of these mighty fine shindigs and I think we should celebrate… with some punch.

I accept!

Wait, don’t know what I’m talking about? Here ya go but before you start – go ahead and make yourself some of this shiny punch and trust me – you’ll see levitating chandeliers by the end. Watch “Shindig” here: Netflix or  Prime.

With it being Firefly week and all we wanted to give you a variety of Firefly related posts. We’ve got plenty of DIY projects and fun fact projects lined up, but not so many drink posts. Sure there’s of course Mudder’s Milk, but that’s coming on Friday (HINT HINT). There are only a handful of drink references in Serenity and Firefly that coming up with something (other than the complete obvious) was a bit interestingAll totaled, we think you’ll like what we’ve got planned.

I came up with a little libation while I was covered in cupcake batter and icing this morning. The episode, Shindig, is very special to me. Some of my favorite moments happen in that episode and I really wanted to dedicate a post or two to some things surrounding that episode. Kaylee’s Dress was one and the elegant Shindig was the second. The unspoken third moment, well technically it was an overarching theme was Mal’s chivalry. /swoon.

Anyways, back to the booze. For starters this drink is somewhat frilly, it’s got mottled strawberries and champagne in it. Gentlemen, please don’t turn up your noses until you try it. Heck it might surprise you, just like Kaylee does when she talks ‘shop’ with several of the gentlemen attending the shindig.

On the guest list for this evening’s libation: OJ (with the pulp), grenadine, iced cake vodka, lemoncello, Bacardi rum, cupcake champagne, strawberries, and a little bit of sugar (not pictured).

Mottling fruit or herbs in general is just plain fun if done correctly. Not like mashing up some bits of fruit is a hard thing to do but you’d be surprised at the number of times that I asked if they would like their [insert consumable of choice here] mottled in their beverage and nobody knew what I was talking about. Mottling is one of the quickest ways to make your drink look ‘more pretty.’ It is literally translated into “to color with streaks or blotches of different shades.” Be prepared though, there is always going to be somebody who doesn’t like bits of fruit in their drink. If this is the case, just go ahead and puree your strawberries into a deliciously blended slurry. SHINDIGPUNCH_nn-1458

It really is a very attractive drink. Mmmm … Captain Tightpants in drink form, yes please. The best part is, this drink is super simple and the end result with make your friends believe that you are a master libationist.
