On September 13th I had the great pleasure of hearing Jason Segel, of Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Muppets fame, speak about his new book Nightmares.
Nightmares is a novel written for kids but that certainly did not prevent many of the adults from purchasing the book for themselves. Me included! During his discussion and Q&A before the signing began he spoke about his inspiration for the book. He said that Nightmares started out as a script, that it was actually the first thing he ever wrote.
He wrote the script while he was working on Freaks and Geeks. He said that movies like Labyrinth and The Goonies and all of Tim Burton’s work were huge inspiration. He liked the element of magic that those stories had, and said he wanted to help remind kids that there’s magic in the world. He decided to turn it into a book instead after doing The Muppets. He said that a movie could not do it justice the way a child’s imagination could. Nightmares was actually taken from an actual recurring nightmare he had as a child. He said he would routinely dream that witches were eating his toes. And so the adventures of Charlie Laird begins.
Charlie is a young boy whose father has remarried. He is positively certain that his new stepmother is a witch and that his nightmares are starting to come true. He finds himself having to face his biggest fears in the real world to overcome his nightmares.
I have not actually gotten a chance to read the book yet but it’s on my to be read shelf!
The best part of the whole thing was actually getting to meet Jason. Wow, what a sweet, sweet man. The signing took place at an indie bookstore here in Cincinnati called Joseph Beth. This is my favorite bookstore EVER! They really have great signings all the time, and I make it a point to try to go to as many as I can. Jason’s was very well-organized thanks to the great staff there. Even though the place was packed and the line was extremely long Jason took a few moments to speak with each person. I told him I was going to be writing a blog about the book for Nerds & Nomsense and he said that it sounded really cool. So maybe he’s reading this!? Also I couldn’t get over just how great he was with all the kids. He read a portion of the book and passed it around to about four or five children that were gathered around him. When they stumbled on words he helped them sound them out and encouraged them with a smile.
So let’s get down to business! I’m sure you want to read the book now. And I just so happen to have an extra copy SIGNED by the man himself. So how about we do a giveaway?
